Pont Valley Opencast Petition
Sign our petition - say NO to opencasting in the Pont Valley
I/We the undersigned call on the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to reject any application by UK Coal to opencast coal from the 'Bradley' site in the Pont Valley for reasons which include:
- The damage that would be caused to the wildlife and environment of the Pont and Derwent Valleys;
- The danger from heavy lorries and increased traffic on nearby roads;
- The problem of noise and dust from the site;
- The damage that would be caused to the growing tourism industry of the area;
- The burning of coal will add to global warming at a time when renewable energy supplies should be developed.

"This would put a terrible scar on the landscape that would never heal. E.M" - E.M.
"The Pont Valley is a very attractive area with interesting wildlife. I regularly visit the area and would hate to see it disfigured by an opencast site.
My local opencast site is on the Blagdon Estate just north of Newcastle. There are lorries arriving at or leaving the site every two or three minutes. The mounds which surround it are unattractive with a poor grass cover. In short, an opencast site in the Pont Valley would greatly increase heavy lorry traffic in the area. It would also severely damage the visual environment and irrevocably harm local wildlife." - J.W.
"Will the Durham Council listen to the people? I have to hope so because UK Coal won't. Profit is the only incentive they could have for destroying all that we hold dear." - M.F.
"Very interested in this campaign and how I can help." - K.B.
"Opencast ruins the countryside and should not be allowed in the Pont Valley." - P.A.
"As a new resident of Dipton I would hate to see an opencast mine in the area. My wife and I settled in Dipton for it's beautiful surroundings and as a healthy place to bring up children but if this site goes ahead then all that will be lost!" - P.M.
