Pont Valley Opencast Petition
Sign our petition - say NO to opencasting in the Pont Valley
I/We the undersigned call on the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to reject any application by UK Coal to opencast coal from the 'Bradley' site in the Pont Valley for reasons which include:
- The damage that would be caused to the wildlife and environment of the Pont and Derwent Valleys;
- The danger from heavy lorries and increased traffic on nearby roads;
- The problem of noise and dust from the site;
- The damage that would be caused to the growing tourism industry of the area;
- The burning of coal will add to global warming at a time when renewable energy supplies should be developed.

"Another disastrous legacy of Thatcher's Britain! Closing down the pits is going to cost future generations dearly. Soon, no green space will be safe from UK Coal. This is a beautiful & peaceful part of derwentside which brings great pleasure to walkers, visitors and residents alike, not to mention providing a safe haven for a wide variety of wildlife and rare woodland plants. To destroy it, in my opinion, would be criminal. M.S.W." - M.S.
