Leadgate's "Day of Action" on Sun, 28 Sep 08

Posted by: dshields on 12/08/2008 05:27 PM (Read: 354)

Anyone looking in on this website will know by now that since 11 May the Pont Valley Network has been acive in Leadgate supporting this year's "Hope 08" project.  Those living in or travelling through Leadgate on any day can see the difference working just a little bit differently can make.

We think some good has come out of our involvement and believe that a strong case has been made and well documented, for the re-introduction of the caretakers we once had to carry on where we must now leave off, at least for this year and turn our attention to other matters.  We feverently hope that some will take over where we must leave off and do more while we do less.

Some folks are still puzzled over the purpose this community website.  And if this remains so, simply consider the words and images now recorded for posterity in the Hope 08 webpages and image galleries.  Detailed, as factually accurate as images and descriptions will allow and in stark contrast to what is being offered by DDC in the way of support, simply because no-one had the good sense or common coutesy to take a few minutes to read through what was being said or done.

Nevertheless, if the best that DDC can offer is 2 skips, a sack of bulbs and 20 shrubs to be used in a "Day of Action", then a day of action we will have - to add to the 137 we've had already!

Throughout Sunday, 28 September starting at 9.00 a.m, we plan to:

  • Help to put in place a really, really good entrance feature at one of the village entrances.
  • Undertake a final cut on the (now) lawned areas at the heart of the village and along the length of the C2C between "The Jolly Drovers" and our last remaining bridge.
  • Revisit two old schemes now they been salvaged and plant the bulbs and shrubs, along with any other plants and shrubs donated by village residents.
  • Sand down and seal the 4 benches we've fashioned after removing (likely by then) the last of the graffiti.
  • Dry-stone wall a 20 metre section at the "Cheviot View" and if necessary errect a low wooden fence behind.
  • Hang a gate after errecting a gatepost (if the offer by DG still stands) adjacent to the school crossing point at the corner of St Ives Gardens opposie Brooms Primry School.
  • Put in some bankside steps below the dutch drain using some of the old sleepers salvaged from the old fence, now cleaned up to remove decayed wood.
  • Put in a new piece of "community art" adjacent to the old Toll House made up of some salvaged oak.
  • Do a bit of raising awareness around some local archaeology and heritage
  • Remove weeds from our very own section of 'Hadrian's Wall' and replacing these with aubretia.
  • Deep cleaning an area of gross derrilection behind Front Street, especially the area immediaely adjacent to the two new lawns which began this project.
  • Planting out some localy grown Oak, Beech, Birch,Sycamore and Chestnut saplings as well as salvaging some from from the spoil in which we have Japanese Knotweed and likely contaminated earth.

Posters will go up soon.  If you as an individual or member of anyone of the organisations or groups here in Leadgate, or indeed elsewhere, can help us in any way, either before or on the day, please do by letting us know through a comment below - or a forum message - or a telephone call - or a knock on the door

WARNING - Leadgate Crossroads - Traffic Lights

Posted by: dshields on 21/09/2007 10:07 PM (Read: 461)

Be extremely careful if driving through Leadgate for the next 5 weeks.  The lights are pretty much useless as road/pedestrians pathways are in the process of being re-vamped as part of our particular regeneration.  We've had quite a few near-misses already and a teenager was knocked of his bike a few days past (though perhaps not a fault of the lights).  If you're a pedestrian be even more careful!
IF PLANNING TO PASS THROUGH LEADGATE TO OR FROM CONSETT, GOOD IDEA TO USE THE BY-PASS FOR THE TIME BEING!
