NOTT Campaigner's Meeting with UK Coal - Monday, 7th October

As part of the continuing efforts at two-way consultation with UK Coal, our NOTT campaign folks met with UK Coal representatives on Monday, 8 October.  They had a list of questions.  Read more to see this list and make a comment to add any more.

Draft questions for UK Coal meeting

 

  • How will you prevent dust contamination to nearby houses, gardens and roads?
  • What is your record on dust contamination in previous sites?
  • How will you prevent noise pollution to nearby residents’ lives?
  • Will you be using blasting techniques for coal extraction?
  • How will you deal with underground water released during the works?
  • How will you deal with pollutants released or created as part of the works?
  • Can you guarantee that the natural hydrology of the area will be restored?
  • Can you accurately forecast how the natural hydrology of the area will be affected, during and after work?
  • How will you protect the ancient woodlands during the works?
  • Can you guarantee that they will not be affected by the works during and after the operations?
  • How will you guarantee the stability of the houses adjacent to the site, the majority of which have no modern type foundations?
  • What tonnage of coal do you expect to extract form the site?
  • What grade of coal is it?
  • What will that coal be used for?
  • Will you guarantee that the coal will be used in the area, region or our country to the benefit of that area, region or our country?
  • Can you guarantee that it will not be exported?
  • How will the coal be transported?
  • What routes will be designated as transport routes?
  • What routes will be guaranteed as non-transport routes?
  • What measures will you have in place to ensure drivers stick to those routes?
  • How will you deal with the rights of way across the land?
  • How will you deal with those paths and stiles that have been used to access and cross the land regularly for the last 100 years or so?
  • Will you be improving access and routes through as part of the project?
  • How does your restoration plan deal with the ancient field systems in the area?
  • How do you propose to restore the ancient topographical features that give this area its uniqueness?
  • Can you guarantee no loss of plant and wildlife diversity?
  • How will you protect against soil loss?
  • How do you propose to protect the nature and hydrology of the special wetland areas?
  • How will you deal with the ancient stone walling boundaries?
  • How will you deal with the ancient tracks and ways that access and cross the site?
  • Are any of the mature English trees to be protected?
  • How will the ponds be protected?
  • How will the pond related wildlife be protected?
  • Can you guarantee no loss of diversity in the ponds and surrounding areas?
  • What is your record on returning wildlife to its natural habitat ie % survival rate?
  • What measures will be in place to manage and protect the existing eco system?
  • How will you mitigate against damage to the multiple bat colonies and types in this area?
  • Will any chemical or biological products be used during and after the works?
  • How will you monitor and control sulphate levels?
  • How will you mitigate against deterioration in water quality caused by high nutrient levels?
  • What tree species do you propose to utilise in the restoration works?
  • What long term management plan will you put in place to nurture this woodland to maturity?
  • Will the railway line of 1840 be protected?
  • Will this line to celebrated as part of the restoration?
  • How will you deal with the route of the 1854Western III Waggonway during the works?
  • Will this Way be celebrated as part of the restoration?
  • How will you deal with the ruins of the old farmhouses during the works?
  • Will these remnants of the ancient messuages be celebrated as part of the restoration?
  • What educational outputs can you guarantee short term and sustainably long term from this project?
  • What heritage outputs can you guarantee short term and sustainably long term from this project?
  • What environmental improvements will you guarantee short and long term from this project?
  • Can you guarantee the initial safety and long term future of the protected species on site?
  • What protected species have you identified on or adjacent to the proposed site?
  • Will the deer population be affected? If so, how to propose to re-establish the population post operations?
  • Do you foresee any impact on the increasing Red Kite and Buzzard population in this area?
  • Can you guarantee that there will be not impact in any way from mine gases and dangerous pollutants uncovered from the plethora of old discarded mine workings on site?
  • Do you have accurate records of the location of old mine workings?
  • What are your plans for the high pressure gas pipe that runs through the proposed site?
  • Can you provide us with an accurate map of where this gas pipe lies?
  • Can you quantify the ongoing and sustainable benefits to the Community from your project?
  • Can you quantify if there any ongoing and sustainable employment benefits from your project?
  • Can you clarify what your definition of ‘ongoing and sustainable’ may be?
  • How will you mitigate the loss of tourism in the area due to your actions?
  • Are you proposing any financial benefits as part of your project?
  • Can these benefits be quantified?
  • What would the LM3 index be of these benefits to the local economy?
  • How would you propose to distribute these benefits?
  • How will you measure need and impact of these benefits?
  • Does your Company have an Equality and Diversity Policy?
  • If the answer is yes, as it should be, how would you deal with breaches of that Policy?
  • How will your project protect all long views to the site?
  • Have you measured the potential CO2 impact on the planet of your proposals?
  • Do you propose to mitigate against this damage via use of Carbon Credits or similar schemes?
  • Exactly how long will your operations last?
  • Would this be the last of such operations in this area?
